Walter is responsible for Corporate Governance, legal advice and business support for the York and North Yorkshire Probation Trust.

His duties include that of Board Secretary; he has responsibility to ensure there are arrangements in place so that the Trust and its staff conduct their business in accordance with the law and with good practice. This includes issues relating to internal control, health and safety, decision making, complaints, freedom of information, data protection and risk management. With his experience of contracting, procurement and tendering he will also work with the Local Delivery Units to meet the challenges of commissioning and best value.

Walter is a qualified solicitor and whilst starting off in private practice, worked in local authorities (Scarborough Borough Council and Powys County Council in Wales) from 1991 until 2005 specialising in corporate, contractual and property matters.

He comes from the East Riding but was married and both of his children were born in North Yorkshire.
